In 2012 Katya Filmus was invited to work with the National Glass Centre Glass Studio to design and produce a series of 27 cast glass works, subdivided into three pieces, for the North East Children's Hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.
Accessed over three floors overlooking the spectacular atrium the works are situated at the entrance to specialist children's units.
To reflect the close interpersonal bonds that develop between children, patients, nurses and consultants the hands of real patients and carers were cast, in incredible detail, and immortalised into the 27, 48% lead crystal panels. The background of each glass panel contains decorative three dimensional textures recreated from messages taken from dozens of get-well cards. The panels collectively weigh over 350kg and some are made from glass that actually changes colour under different lights.
The project took nearly 9 months to complete.
